Hi Lia, Thanks for your letter. I am indeed honored to give you some ideas about your Bat Mitzvah. First, I must say that you picked the right family. They are seriously committed to Judaism. They sent you to Schechter, observe the Mitzvot, and live their lives as Jews. So, Yasher Koach to your parents (and brother). Second, because of this upbringing, you have quite a few skills. Believe it or not, you are ahead of the vast majority of kids your age. These skills will last a life time. Continue practicing and improving your synagogue skills. Believe me, when you are my age, you will be glad you did. Third, be committed to Eretz Yisrael. I believe American Jews should be as familiar with Israel, support and travel through Israel, as they are familiar with the U.S. Understanding the issues that are confronting Israel and how how to defend Israel when you get into discussions with other people. Take advantage of the trips to Israel and make sure you go while you are in high school. Both my kids did and thought they were outstanding, even though they both traveled to Israel on other occasions. Stay active at Beth Hillel. WE NEED YOU. Hope this is somewhat helpful. Am looking forward to you Bat Mitzvah next month. Best wishes, Dr. B. Irwin Benuck Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. Go to the next page, or jump to one of the letters listed below.
