Dear Li a: It was a pleasure reading your letter about your upcoming Bat Mitzvah. Becoming a Bat Mitzvah places much more responsibility on you as an individual. According to Jewish law. you are considered an adult. I see from your letter that you have already started in the right direction, and I hope you continue. I am a State Senator from the 8th Legislative District, which includes a large percentage of Orthodox Jews as well as other minorities. I am the only Orthodox Senator who has ever served in the Illinois General Assembly. I am extremely proud of that accomplishment. My colleagues in Springfield respect my dietary laws. They respect the fact that on Friday I must leave early to arrive home for Shabbos. Many of my colleagues and visitors to Springfield take note of the mezuzah on my office doorpost. I am confident that you will be successful in school and in life as you continue to explore your Jewish heritage. You will find. as I have, that embracing your Jewish identity will enrich your life. I know your parents will be proud of you as you become a true Bat Yisroel. I wish much success, mazel and nachos to you and your family. Sincerely yours, Ira
